Food supplements are concentrated sources of nutrients (eg minerals and vitamins) or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect that are marketed in "dose" form (ie pills, tablets, capsules or liquids in measured doses). There is a wide range of nutrients and other elements that may be present in food supplements, including, but not limited to, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, fiber, and various plant and herbal extracts.
Food supplements are intended to correct nutritional deficiencies, maintain an adequate level of intake of certain nutrients or support specific physiological functions. They are not drugs and, as such, they cannot have a pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action. Therefore, its use is not intended to treat or prevent disease in humans or to modify physiological functions.
